Network Types (LAN, MAN, WAN, PAN)
Networks come in different sizes โ from your own room to the entire planet.
PAN (Personal Area Network)
A PAN covers the smallest range โ typically just a few meters around a single person. Think of your phone connected to your smartwatch via Bluetooth, or your laptop connected to wireless earbuds. It's designed for personal devices to talk to each other, not for wider communication.
LAN (Local Area Network)
A LAN covers a single building or campus โ your home Wi-Fi network, a school's computer lab, or an office network are all LANs. LANs are usually owned and managed by a single organization or person, offer high speed, and low latency since everything is physically close together.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
A MAN spans a city or a large campus area โ think of a network connecting multiple branches of a bank across one city, or a cable TV network covering a metropolitan area. It's larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, often built by connecting multiple LANs together.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
A WAN spans a large geographical area โ even multiple countries or continents. The internet itself is the largest WAN in existence. Companies with offices in different cities often connect them via a private WAN so all locations can share the same internal systems.
Comparing Them Side by Side
The key difference is simply SCALE and OWNERSHIP: PAN (a few meters, personal), LAN (a building, owned by one entity), MAN (a city, often multiple organizations connected), WAN (countries/continents, typically uses public infrastructure and multiple providers).

Your college's Wi-Fi is a LAN. If that college has branches across Mumbai connected together, that's a MAN. If it also connects to its international campus in another country, that connection is a WAN. Your phone talking to your fitness band is a PAN.
